What the sound told you
- A loud bang, then a door that feels impossibly heavy. Almost always a torsion spring. The bang is the spring releasing its stored tension inside the tube.
- The door hanging crooked or jammed at an angle. Usually a cable off its drum or a snapped cable on one side.
- Grinding or jerking movement. Rollers, bent track, or hardware working loose.
- The motor runs but nothing moves. A stripped drive gear or a disengaged trolley — the opener is fine, the connection is not.
- The door reverses just before closing. Safety sensors, and often just a wipe and a realignment.
The first 10 minutes
- Do not run the opener again. Not even “just once to see”.
- Do not pull the red release cord on a door that is open. With a broken spring, releasing the trolley can drop the door. If the door is already down, the release cord is safe to use.
- Get people and cars clear of the door’s path, and keep children and pets out of the garage.
- Do not try to lift it by hand if it feels heavy. A door that fights you is a door with no counterweight.
- If the door is stuck open, secure what you can inside and lock the interior door to the house. This is the situation that makes it an emergency rather than an inconvenience.
