Look above the door. If there is a single metal shaft with one or two springs wound around it, you have torsion springs. If there are two long stretched springs running horizontally above the tracks on either side, you have extension springs. That one difference changes how the door behaves, what a repair costs, which openers you can install, and how dangerous a failure is.
How each system actually works
Torsion springs store energy by twisting. A spring is wound tight around a steel bar above the opening, and as the door lowers, the cables wind onto drums at each end of that bar and load the spring. Lift the door and the spring unwinds, returning that energy. It is a controlled, balanced system, and it is why a properly sprung 180-pound door feels like it weighs fifteen.
Extension springs store energy by stretching. They run parallel to the horizontal tracks and pull against pulleys as the door comes down. Simpler, cheaper, older technology – and the reason safety cables exist, because a stretched spring that snaps becomes a projectile unless a cable is threaded through it.
Why it matters more than most homeowners realise
- Balance quality. Torsion systems hold balance far more precisely across the whole travel. Extension doors tend to feel heavier at the bottom and lighter at the top.

- Opener options. A wall-mount (jackshaft) opener drives the torsion bar directly, so it simply cannot be installed on an extension-spring door without converting first. That surprises a lot of people mid-project – see wall-mount openers in 2026.
- Failure behaviour. A torsion spring failing announces itself with a loud bang and leaves the door heavy but usually in place. An extension spring failing can send steel across the garage if there is no safety cable, and often leaves the door hanging crooked.
- Wear on everything else. Whichever system you have, springs at the end of their life quietly transfer their job to the opener. That is the single most common cause of openers dying years early – here is how that happens.
Should you convert extension to torsion?
Often yes, and it is a more common job than people expect. Converting makes sense when you are already replacing the door, when you want a wall-mount opener, when headroom allows it, or when you simply want the quieter, better-balanced system. It requires enough headroom above the opening for the shaft and springs – typically around 12 inches, though low-headroom conversion kits exist for tighter garages.
It is not always worth it. If the extension system is healthy, safety cables are in place, and you are happy with the opener, there is no urgency. We will tell you which situation you are in rather than selling the conversion by default.

If one spring breaks, do both need replacing?
On a two-spring door, yes – and this is not an upsell. Both springs have run the identical number of cycles, so the second is typically within months of the first. Replacing one means paying a second service call soon after, and running a mismatched pair in the meantime.
How long do garage door springs last?
A standard spring is rated around 10,000 cycles – roughly seven years at four openings a day, or about three and a half years if your garage is the door you use every time you leave the house. High-cycle springs at 25,000 or more are the fix for heavy-use homes.
